About Me

Thirty-five years helping people communicate in English

I'm Mark Byrne — a copyeditor, translator and English teacher who has spent 35 years helping people communicate in English, and the last 32 of them living and working in Spain.

The Practice

My approach

My teaching approach

I'm a native English speaker, fully bilingual in Spanish, which is at the heart of how I work: I understand not just what a Spanish author has written, but what they mean — the idea behind the sentence — and I can carry it into natural, accurate English. That's as true of a research paper as it is of a conversation class.

Alongside that, I teach — and I've never stopped, because I enjoy it. My approach is relaxed, honest and human, but always focused on getting results.

Over the years I've specialised in academic work: editing and translating research papers, journal articles, book chapters and monographs for publication in peer-reviewed journals and with international publishers. I'm the copyeditor and translator for Small Business International Review (now Scopus-indexed), and I've worked with Brill, Routledge and the CSIC, among many others, across a wide range of disciplines.

Whether I'm helping a professor get published or helping a student find their confidence in English, the aim is the same: clear, correct, natural English, and a job done properly.
